Back Hip Pain before Period

Menstruation often brings with it some form of discomfort or pain for a significant portion of the female population. Period pains usually take various forms in different women, with some complaining of back and hip pain before their periods start. Some of the causes include:


A primary cause of period pain is the uterus, the organ that holds a baby during pregnancy. The uterus has a muscular wall that contracts throughout your menstrual cycle. Back and hip pain before your period may also be caused by fibroids. These are non-cancerous tumors that grow in or around the uterus that may be harmless, with some women experiencing no symptoms. However, uterine fibroids can cause back pain that may be referred to your hips when the fibroid creates pressure on your uterus. Fibroids may also worsen normal back pain usually experienced during menstruation.


Endometriosis is another cause of back and hip pain before menstruation. This gynecological disorder occurs when the cells that form the lining of the uterus implant or grow in other parts of the body including the ovaries, fallopian tubes, parts of the bowel and the bladder. The greatest problem is that during the early stages of the disease, the signs may appear as the normal changes that take place in the body during the menstrual cycle. However, these symptoms usually worsen over time.


Although hip and back pain before your period may be related and have the same root cause, they may also have different causes. As such, it is important to speak to your doctor concerning your symptoms for proper testing, diagnosis and treatment. However, if the pain is not caused by an underlying condition, you may experience significant pain relief by ensuring that you exercise on a regular basis. Resting when needed and avoiding caffeinated drinks, alcohol and smoking may also take care of mild period pains.
